Soul: Do not Neglect Mrs. Deavers

We have been planning on doing this for quite some time and when I had two days off in a row, we decided the time was right! Last night I spent the night with Mrs. Deavers! To consciously make an effort to keep her a part of my life is a really important gap year goal to me. If you are lost and want to read some background, you can click here! She is a very special lady.

It was rainy and gross and we were just enjoying each other's company, so I didn't take any pictures of the two of us. However, I did manage to snap a picture of one part of breakfast!

She also whipped up some homemade gravy, eggs, sausage and bacon! WOW! Haven't had a breakfast like that in ages. I unplugged my home DVD player and took it to her house so we could watch some movies. What sleepover is complete without chick flicks? They're two of my favorite movies!

I got to spend some time with her and watch more movies! Which is also a goal of mine. We had tons of fun and are definitely planning on doing it again! If you haven't seen The First Wives Club you are in for a treat! So funny.

Soul: Create Sonria.com

Alright people. Let's talk.

I'm still trying to figure this out, but basically I want to create a website for whatever it is that I'm doing here. A place where all my blogging, photo uploading and editing, graphic design and whatever else that strikes my fancy can coexist in one, clean, streamlined website. As of right now, that's the master plan.

The only problem is that the master plan is a bit of a muddled plan. Still working on the streamlined part. Here is what I have been discovering: a website costs a lot of money, takes skills I clearly don't possess and I want this thing to be a success so it takes lots and lots of planning. And if I can make a profit from it, that'd be great too.

Here's what I have so far.

Lots of scribbling

Lots of late nights (3am)

Lots of tough layout decisions (these are all rough drafts people)

And one blog header I feel really good about

Photo by Mert & Marcus for Vogue Paris.
Nobody Panic, that model is Andrej Pejic (a man)

Right now I'm just trying to see if the website will look good. Before I pursue this I want to experiment with images, layouts and headers to see if it can be done.

Sonria is my favorite Spanish word (means smile) and that's what I've wanted to name this site since I made this eight months ago.

Turns out that domain name has been taken by a spanish language education site and a dentist in Argentina (whazzup Argentina?). Out of luck. Urg.

But that's alright because I have something much better in mind... That's where I'm at right now. Just figuring things out. Better things.

Happy Monday night everyone! I'm excited for this week. Job interview tomorrow and spend the night party planned with Mrs. Deavers!

October Goal Accomplished! Watch Four Films

One down... Do you know what I did to watch all these movies because I can't afford going to a theatre and we cancelled our cable? The library. Why did I not think of this before? It's free!

Here are the great films I've watched so far this month!

I've seen Rebel Without a Cause many times before but it was a first time for the other three. I could go on and on about it but I'll spare you. Let me just say that I love James Dean (I own three posters of his face) and this film is the quintessential teenage angst film. From the costumes and the dramatic camera angles to the dialogue, Rebel Without a Cause is so cinematic. It's the right mixture of overdramatic (helloooo Natalie Wood's opening scene) and real emotion (James' now famous "You're tearing me apart!"line) and entertaining as anything. Leather jackets, knife fights, a brooding James Dean, teenage angst and falling in love in the early morning hours. Heck yeah. Sign me up.

Shakespeare in Love is a visual masterpiece that makes you want to fall in love with a poet and go rummage around for those Shakespeare plays you know you have somewhere. Tom Stoppard's screenplay is perfection (Can you love a fool? Can you love a player? Why yes, yes I can Mr. Stoppard) and the characterization of the major and minor actors is spot on. Luxurious costumes, Romance, intelligent comedy and one Dame Judi Dench. Need I say more? Get thee to a Blockbuster.

I love all three lead actresses and have known about this film for quite sometime (Basically, I prowl on IMDB) and have even recommended it to people without seeing it because I just knew it was good from the reviews I've read. After watching it, I now see that I completely underestimated this film. Reading reviews, looking at pictures and watching the trailer repeatedly over the years did nothing to prepare me for the emotional roller coaster that is The Hours. It put me in the most beautiful melancholic mood.

The Hours is one of the most powerful films I have ever seen.

I watched An Education just this afternoon, actually. The film and the cast deserve all the accolades they received. Carey Mulligan is always an absolute pleasure to watch on the silver screen; she has a long career ahead of her, that's for sure. The soundtrack by Paul Englishby and the costumes by Odile Dicks-Mireaux certainly deserve a mention for helping to create the world of the film. I still haven't quite mulled it over, but I can definitely say that An Education is an excellent work of film.

Recently I was talking with an old friend I haven't spoken to in a while, and as we were getting reacquainted he asked, "What is your favorite medium of art?" I thought about how much I love Fashion, how I live for it. All the songs that have shaped me and saved me came into my head. The images that have risen from the pages of magazines and books and lodged themselves somewhere into the makeup of my being. Art I have created, purchased, dreamed about and touched. Beautiful words I have read.

My answer shocked myself a little bit. I wasn't expecting for my subconscious to whisper "Film" but it did. I suppose Film is the greatest culmination of all mediums of art. It really can transform you, if you let it.  That's the reason why I want to watch more films. I would like to be transformed this year.

Soul: Make Photoshop by Best Friend!

In order to not buy photoshop (shhhh!!!) I had my friends who are graphic designers find me a copy I could use. During the month of September I had a thirty day trial and so I was photoshopless from the first of October to yesterday. It was horrible!

Photoshop safely back on the Mac, I've been going crazy! Sleep? What sleep?

Want to see some stuff I've made? Happy to oblige.

My sister wanted me to make something for her and this is the first thing I came up with. Still working on it though... Her birthday is tomorrow and that is her favorite quote! Feliz cumple mi hermana linda!

Isn't this cool? So glad I thought to do this. June 2011 is on the Left, April 2011 is on the right!

An image I made for my friend's non-profit clothing company that benefits the Red Thread Movement to stop the sex trade. Like Canon Clothing on Facebook to see how you can help!

Some Minimal Movie Posters I made. If you want to know the whole story surrounding these, it's really kind of cool, head over to Artemis!

My mom has had the same business logo since the 80's. I took it upon myself to make her a new one!

That's it for now. I'm in the middle of making something Beatles related! More on that later. If you want to use these images for anything be my guest, just be sure to give me a lil' credit. Please and Thankyou! :)
Have a great Tuesday all! I'm about to have a movie marathon and cross some goals off the October list! Watch 4 Films, I am coming for you...

Mind: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn Review

One of my goals for the gap year is to read 10,000 pages. I don't know if that is going to happen but I will try to read everything in sight until then!

My review of  A Tree Grows in Brooklyn  by Betty Smith is up on Of the The Thing Sung! I'm trying something new, called the

You can click here if you want to read it!

September Goals: Recap

Alright! So it looks like the second month of my sojourn from higher education has come to an end. September was just as wonderful as August! I am loving the independence and being my own boss for awhile. I'm also excited because I did a little better this month! I'll get to that later.

First, let's see what I wanted to accomplish.

How did I do?

READ AT LEAST FOUR BOOKS
I gave myself half a credit for this one, because I only got around to reading two books. They both were excellent, time well spent. I wrote a review of And Then There's This, read it here!
With those two out of the way, my Gap Year Page Count has reached:
1458 pages

20 POSTS ON ARTEMIS
I posted about those 20 a few days ago, so you're all caught up on that one!

READ 4 NERUDA POEMS
When I said "memorize" that's not really what I meant. My book of Pablo Neruda poetry is bilingual, so the more I read the poems and get familiar with them, the better I become at Spanish. See what I did there? Haha But in all seriousness, if you want to read more about Pablo Neruda, head over to Of the Thing Sung

DON'T NEGLECT MAMA DEAVS
Called several times and visit for next week scheduled. Love that lady!

PROCURE PHOTOSHOP
fin.

BUG PARENTS
done and done

SAVE AT LEAST $500

Oh no! I didn't quite make it this month.  Bummer.
Remember, "If your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep will be your downfall!" and that it's never too early or too late to start developing healthy financial habits! Go for an Excel spreadsheet budget, it's a lifesaver.

WATCH AT LEAST 2 FILMS
Working on the Reviews right now! I should have them up soon and I'll keep you posted. Guess which ones I watched?
2 Films I've wanted to see for ages!

One word Review: Brilliant
One Word Review: Trippppppppyyyyyy

So how did I do?

Not too bad.
Much better than last month but like I said before, no one wants to be 53% successful! October, I am coming for you!

October goals up tomorrow, work wore me out today. Goodnight dreamers! :)
