Mind: Watch More Movies!

You already know that one of my goals for this year is to watch more movies, but let me tell you why! Because movies are awesome. That's why!

But no, seriously. Sometimes I read Roger Ebert's film reviews and pour through his essay collections, often I spend hours on IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes discovering new films, trailers and actors and I recently finished The Film Club, a memoir by David Gilmour in which he agrees to let his son drop out of high school if the boy will agree to watch three movies a week.

I don't have to drop out of high school, thankfully, but since apparently movies aren't important to Kennesaw anymore (thanks for going out of business Blockbuster and Hollywood Video) and Netflix went up on their price, I think watching three a week is a little far fetched for me. So I made it four a month but with a conscious effort to watch more.

I plan on watching everything! From the latest blockbusters and romantic comedies, to obscure cult classics, Foreign films and the universally critically acclaimed films. Also, everything on Spielberg's list would be a nice Bucket List goal. Maybe I'll try to make a dent in that this year. I just want to broaden my horizons and be intellectually, visually and artistically stimulated. If I can laugh a little bit, that's alright too!

Alrighty then, explanation out of the way, the first film watched of the Gap Year was Warner Bros. Crazy, Stupid, Love. I am always wary of spending money in a movie theater, just because I'm broke and that is a luxury, but wowwwza. I would pay to go see it again any day!

I'm sure you don't live under a rock, but if you do, the plot line is that Cal (Steve Carell) is in the process of getting a divorce from his high school sweetheart Emily (Julianne Moore). Ryan Gosling's character, Jacob, is the resident ladies' man of the neighborhood bar and decides to help Cal get his groove back, so to speak. Of course that is only the surface plot line, there are many more layers. Oh wait, what a novel idea. A romantic comedy can have layers? Revolutionary.

I won't put any spoilers in here, that's just plain mean. But let me just tell you the finest scene in the film is when Cal sneaks into his family home's backyard to do some yard work because he fears another man will do it and he sees his wife and children through the windows eating ice cream. Emily goes to another room and calls him, asking with help because the pilot light went out. Cal tenderly walks her through the process, yet he can clearly see that she is standing in the study, not the basement. The dialogue is about pilot lights, but what they are saying without saying it is so beautiful you could cry!

There isn't a weak link in the whole film. Emma Stone is adorable as usual, even though I think lately she has just been cast as herself! But whatever, I love herself so that's not a problem. Marisa Tomei is hilarious, Ryan Gosling plays the suave philanderer perfectly and ladies left and right will be falling in love with him if they survived The Notebook. Josh Groban even has a delightful cameo as Emma Stone's boyfriend (watch for vignettes of modern life in the scenes between her and the lawyers. No doubt they are playing Crazy Birds on their blackberries!). They may be overlooked because they aren't the bigger name stars, but two of my favorites were Jonah Bobo (Cal's thirteen year old son) and Analeigh Tipton, who plays Jessica, the babysitter. Soooo good.

In short, the film isn't life changing, but it is definitely worth your money! The actors do an amazing job with the wonderful script provided by Dan Fogelman. In some parts it is genuinely funny and in others it is genuine and that's all you need.

Go see it! A perfect summer film. The guys will love it too, promise.

Soul: Don't neglect Mama Deavs!

Many of my friends and family know about this situation, but if you don't let me fill you in a little bit so this goal makes sense. (Like I said, some of these will need some explanation :)

Edward Deavers was one of my high school teachers, Drama directors, mentors and friends. He was a larger than life figure and could inspire a group of normally apathetic teenagers like nothing you've never seen! Ohhh Ed. How we miss you.

Sadly, he passed away of a heart attack on February 12, 2010 and left behind his beloved mother, Mrs. Dorothy Deavers. The Drama Department made her part of our family and tried to visit her or invite her to visit us as much as possible. As the months rolled by and our busy lives became somewhat normal again, Mrs. Deavers was still grieving the loss of her son.

I'm not saying that we do neglect her; a lot of us still call and visit and send postcards from our summer vacations. We get together to celebrate her birthday and Ed's birthday and the anniversary of his passing. We need her and she needs us. But for all that we do, there's so much that we don't. It's hard for me to understand how lonely she must be, and if I can alleviate just a little bit of that loneliness then my job here is done!

So this is my goal, to send up a prayer for her whenever I think about her, do things I know she'll appreciate, call as often as I can to see how her week has been, and when I have some gas money, drive out to visit her. If you're reading this and you know her, please join me and make that same commitment. I used to think I owed it to Mr. Deavers, but no matter how much it hurts, he is gone. She is still here. We owe it to her. And she is SO MUCH FUN! Just being around her will bless you and lift your spirits!

Just take a look at these pictures! This past weekend, the Drama Seniors got together one last time for "breakfast for dinner" at her house before we all go our separate ways for college.

Awwwww, how presh!
She truly is a lady in every sense of the word.
We love you Mama Deavs!!!

August Goals

I have decided, dear readers (if you're still with me at post 3 ;) that staring down an entire, blank, structureless, three hundred and sixty-five day year can be really scary. So I'm doing monthly goals as well that will add up to the big, sometimes vague ones. You follow my logic, yes? It will just help me out, a lot!

I hope you're not thinking that this year off will be like a Nazi concentration camp! Of course I'm going to have some fun and relax, hang out with friends and family and really enjoy myself! But it's kind of like this: It will be easier to be strict in the beginning than slack off and realize in November that I have accomplished nothing.

I have to prove it to myself that I can be responsible enough to have a plan and stick to it. Surely you can understand that! Plus who wants to waste this kind of opportunity? Not I.

This Gap Year thing needs an easy button...

Because I guess we can go ahead and cross out two goals on the list!

Now don't we all feel better! One down, a bunch to go! This crazy scheme might actually work. I also added another SOUL goal (hehe), can you find it?

Hope everyone is having a great Monday! Or at least a tolerable Monday.

The Goals

Hello everyone! It's been a long time since I made the first post of a blog! I'm a little uncertain of what to say right now, but I guess I'll start at the beginning:

This is me, Anna. Nice to meet you!
If you read the blog description at the top right, you know that I decided to take a break from formal education after my graduation from high school in May. If you didn't, it's all good. Basically, I came up with a list of goals for this year off (August 2011 - August 2012) and with the help of an 18 month calendar and the organizational abilities of my new MacBook, I am going to accomplish as many as ALL of them!

Your job is to help me help myself by just being here. This year won't be wasted, and with Mind the Gap I will be forced to hold myself accountable! Having said this, you don't have to be a follower or even read regularly, I'm just trying something new. If you want to be along for the ride, you're absolutely welcome to support and join me in my new adventures.

To help with organization of the blog and in my own mind, I divided these goals up into three categories: Mind, Body and Soul. Some of them are pretty self explanatory, others will need a lot of explanation, some are really private and I may not talk about often, if at all, and others are just silly little things I've always wanted to do. I'll explain more as we go, but for now, here they are!

That last one is the most important, but we can talk about that later. And that's about it for now!

Oh! Almost forgot, here are some things you should know about me:

~ Presently, I work at Forever 21. If you here me refer to "work" that is the glorious location I am speaking of.
~ I have a thing for mythology and naming inanimate objects. Don't judge me. So here is a guide for you. Artemis is my main blog, which you can look at by clicking here! Apollo is my gorgeous Olympus camera (get it? Olympus hehehe) and Adonis is my new MacBook. If you hear me refer to them, they aren't people.
~ My dream job is a Fashion stylist, at the present moment, but I am also taking this year to narrow down what I want to do. Graphic Design? Fashion Marketing? Literature? Directing? Photography? Old School Drawing and Painting? I don't know... yet

ROCK ON!

~ Anna
p.s. blogging is really fun, you should try it!
